Calacatta Viola
Cream and white angular fragments sit in a matrix of deep plum, aubergine and near-black, with rust-gold seams running between them. Calacatta Viola is a breccia in which the violet does the work and the white reads as light breaking through it. Despite the Italian name it is a Turkish marble, also sold as Calacatta Violet. It is never a background. One book-matched wall behind a bath, one bar front or one fireplace decides the room. Everything else can stay plaster and oak. Two well-chosen slabs will do more here than twenty taken at random. It is a stone used once in a building and remembered long afterwards.
